70 Years of Museum Speelklok
Museum Speelklok is celebrating its 70th anniversary, and we’d love to celebrate it with you! From 10 October onwards, the museum will be hosting a photo exhibition. Look back at special and memorable moments from seventy years of Speelklok!
How it all began
It all began in 1954, with a small group of enthusiasts of street organs and music boxes who felt that this unique part of our cultural heritage deserved more attention. After two years of searching for working instruments, the time had come. On 18 August 1956, the exhibition From Music Box to Street Organ (Van Speeldoos tot Pierement) opened in Utrecht. It marked the beginning of what is now Museum Speelklok!
Pictures from the past
In the mini-exhibition, you’ll be transported back to the museum’s early years, even to the time before it found its home in the Buurkerk. Take a look at the exhibition galleries through the years and discover how the museum and its collection have changed over time.
You’ll also see images of the musical guided tour, which has been running for decades. It has introduced more than 15 million visitors to the extraordinary world of mechanical musical instruments. View photos of items from the collection that briefly took to the streets and spot familiar faces who have visited the museum over the years. How many can you recognise?
Museum anthem from the Dom Tower
In addition to the photo exhibition, there is a second celebratory event. On 9 October, Malgosia Fiebig will bring her carillon concert from the Dom Tower to a close with our very own museum anthem.
