Musical workshops
This May holiday, you can get creative in our new Maker Space! Sign up for one of the three musical workshops, experiment with sounds and discover that sound is really in everything.
Piezo Noise Box workshop
In this experimental workshop, you will dive into the world of unexpected sound sources. You will discover how to transform the faintest vibrations into exciting – and sometimes rather strange – sounds.
You will experiment with different materials and, above all, your own creativity. By tapping, scratching, bending or rubbing, you will make objects respond through your noise box. In this way, entirely new sound textures emerge: softly crackling or sharp and rhythmic. You will hear every movement, and every material has its own distinctive sound.
You will:
- listen to tiny sounds that would normally go unnoticed
- experiment with materials to create unique sonic responses
No experience with electronics or music is required. This workshop is all about experimenting, being willing to try things out, and enjoying the discovery of sound.
At the end of the workshop, you will present your own Noise Box: a personal instrument that works only with your unique combination of materials, movement and imagination.
Please also bring along your own object (maximum 20 × 10 cm) if you are curious to hear what it sounds like when amplified. Perhaps that odd little thing in your bag will turn out to have an unexpected talent for sound. Discover how sound can sometimes be hidden in the most surprising places.
When: Wednesday 22 and 29 April
Time: 14.00 to 15.00
Age: 8 years and over
Cost: €2.50
Drum machine workshop
What if a table, a glass bottle or a piece of metal became your next instrument? In this unique workshop, you will create a musical composition in an unexpected way, using everyday objects.
Not traditional instruments, but sounds that you discover, build and bring to life yourself.
Using clever technology and playful experimentation, you will work together to build a real music machine. Small electromagnetic ‘hammers’ (solenoids) set objects in motion, making them tap, vibrate and resonate. You decide the rhythm, the sound and the composition.
You will:
- search for sound in everything around you
- experiment with materials and different tones and textures
- programme your own rhythms using an app
- work together to create a unique musical piece
No musical experience is required. Whether you are a musician or simply curious, everyone can take part and contribute. The workshop is all about discovering, listening and creating together.
At the end of the workshop, you will present your own mechanical piece of music as a group – and hear how a room full of everyday objects can be transformed into a surprising orchestra. Come and listen, build and play. Because music really is everywhere.
When: Sunday 19 and 26 April
Time: 14.00 to 15.00
Age: 8 years and over
Cost: €2.50
Make your own musical instrument
There’s music in everything! During this creative workshop, you’ll get to work with various materials and make your own musical instrument.
For example, make a tambourine, a thumb piano, a drum or a kazoo. You’ll work with recycled materials such as bicycle bells, cardboard, tins, bottle caps and other found objects. This way, you’ll discover just how much music is hidden in everyday items.
You will:
- Discover what sound is
- Experiment with different materials and the sounds they can make
- Play your own instrument
Maybe you will even create a whole new sound or a unique instrument!
When: Saturday 18 and 25 April
Time: 14.00 to 15.00
Age: From 6 years old
Cost: €2.50
