On Saturday 12 September, you can join free guided tours of the Buurkerk. Our Restoration Studio, just a short walk from the museum, will also be open to the public especially for this occasion. Buurkerk

Discover the rich history of the Buurkerk, the historic church that houses Museum Speelklok. During this guided tour, you’ll learn about the church’s history, its medieval frescoes, and the important role it has played in Utrecht’s city life for more than a thousand years.

Until 1125, the Buurkerk was the city’s only parish church for ordinary citizens. Over the centuries, it survived fires, storms, floods and military attacks, and weathered the Reformation. The church also served as an important passage through the city, with people and traffic passing straight through the building.

After serving many different purposes over the centuries, the Buurkerk has been home to Museum Speelklok and its remarkable collection of self-playing musical instruments for more than 40 years.

Restoration studio

Take a behind-the-scenes look inside our Restoration studio, located next to Flora’s Hof. This is where our collection is maintained and restored by our expert restorers, ensuring that these extraordinary instruments continue to play just as they did, in some cases, centuries ago.

The workshop is normally closed to visitors, but it will be open especially for Open Monumentendag. Our guides will explain the history of the building and the restoration work that takes place here.
