At the fairground!

The fair is a place for wonder and entertainment. It has been accompanied by machines and music for a long time now! In this summer exhibition, visitors got a taste of the fairground atmosphere. From fairground organs to a cabinet of curiosities, and from a miniature fairground to carousel animals: it was all on display in At the Fairground! A summer full of music & magic.

The ultimate fairground organ

Scattered throughout the museum you will find all kinds of fairground instruments, pictures and objects. As a showpiece, the Double Ruth, a grand fairground organ. This ultimate fairground organ ended up in the collection of Museum Speelklok in 1957, where it now shines on the stage. besides merry fairground music, it can play complete operas and other classical music. Fairground enthusiasts could visit the museum café for traditional fairground sweets. Upon entry this summer, visitors received a voucher for an ice cream from the Mijs IJs ice cream van.

Special fairground weekend

During the special fairground weekend in August, the museum was even more focused on the fair, with extra activities for young and old. Visitors could enjoy a free ride on the mini carousel, join a festive fairground-themed guided tour, and grab a sweet deal in the museum café.

AU-2-MATERIA

In the autumn, the spectacular musical couture dress AU-2-MATERIA, designed by Maartje Dijkstra and produced by Beorn Lebenstedt, was on display at Museum Speelklok. The dress was inspired by the royal Clay clock, a highlight of the museum’s collection.

3D pen

The installation consisted of a golden dress and a transparent over-dress. This controls a ribbon with a music composition by Beorn Lebenstedt. The ribbon moves around the dress like an organ book. A unique feature of Maartje’s work is that the fabric of the dress is printed by hand with a 3D pen, an innovative, labour-intensive and costly process.
