For the first time, a work by a contemporary artist has become part of the museum’s permanent collection. The piece was previously shown in the exhibition Make It Work and, from 14 April 2026, will take pride of place in the new interactive presentation Music Machines & Me. The acquisition was made possible with the support of the VriendenLoterij.

Pianola system

For the ‘Porcelain Piano’, Jelle Mastenbroek drew inspiration from the museum’s collection. The artwork combines two recognisable living room classics: a china cabinet and a piano. The 48 porcelain plates each have their own tone and are played by the piano system. This allows you to programme music for the porcelain piano!

About the artist

Jelle Mastenbroek (Groningen, 1988) graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2012. He often uses finds from thrift shops in his playful installations. By giving discarded items a new life, he reflects on how we deal with the abundance of material goods in contemporary society.

In 2016, he won a Milano Design Award in the category Best Technology for ‘Data Orchestra’. His work has been exhibited at the Groninger Museum, the Ceramics Museum and the CODA Museum, among others.
